Bike the Drive

Jun 6, 2006 | Cycling, Travel

On May 26th, Tina and I drove to Chicago so that I could particpate in Chicago’s Bike the Drive. We stayed downtown at the House of Blues-Marina Towers directly on the river.

On Saturday, I joined a 15 mile neighborhood history bike tour, exploring the near north, west and south sides of Chicago’s downtown area. In keeping with PVYC tradition, we stopped at the Handlebar, a bike friendly bar and drank a cold Goose Island Ale.

On Sunday am, the City of Chicago allows Lake Shore Drive to be closed to cars for 5 hours and approximately 20,000 cyclists ride from Bryn Mar on the north side to the Museum of Science and Industry on the south side or anywhere in between. The length of closed road was 15 miles and Thomas and I rode 2 laps for a total of 60 miles. The most special moment for me was between 5 and 5:30am when I rode 8 miles Lake Shore Drive with NO other cars or bikes on the drive as the sun was rising.

On Monday, we drive north to St. Paul for a week long visit with friends and family. ne of the highlights was Scott Phillip’s 49th B-Day party in Monticello.

Images of this great road trip are viewable in our gallery.
