First Pileated of the winter

Dec 7, 2008 | Birding

Every day is special, but today feels even more so.  We woke to a light snow and a backyard full of birds.  They seem to know when to bulk up for the cold and extra snow arriving.  Special today was the arrival  and first view of the male Pileated Woodpecker this winter.  (Note: Last year’s first sighting was December 6th)

We hope that the female is in the area, and he is just checking out food sources for both of them.
