Godfrey “Cho” Gahemba, Rwanda’s rising star, was struck and tragically killed by a vehicle on December 14, during a cycling race in Rwamagana, Rwanda . He was 17 years old. Godfrey was chosen as one of two Junior riders in Rwanda to attend a two month training camp in South Africa prior to the Junior World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa. This was Godfrey’s first time leaving the country of Rwanda. Godfrey was poised to lead the future of Rwandan cycling as he placed third overall in the Tour of Rwanda and first in the Junior rider category. Godfrey lived in Kigali with Team Rwanda member Adrien. Godfrey was orphaned during the genocide in 1994 and was taken in by members of his community and has been largely raised by Adrien. Godfrey will be greatly missed by Adrien Niyonshuti, Jonathan Boyer, and the rest of Team Rwanda. Please keep Adrien and Jock in your prayers.
