Killer in the front yard

Jan 17, 2008 | Birding

wilson-20080117-10.jpgThis morning, while drinking coffee, a new visitor landed in the yard, checked out the options, nabbed a sparrow out of mid-air and flattened him on the driveway. He then proceeded to fly off to the neighbors to eat breakfast. First time we have seen a Sharp-shinned hawk. They are quite small and my first impression was that a baby hawk had flown in. Fun to see, but I hope he doesn’t make a habit of picking off birds at the feeders.
