Cooper’s have hatched

Mama Cooper’s Hawk has hatched her eggs behind our house.  She now gets to sit up on the edge of the nest rather than spending all of her time on the eggs.  We have not seen the hatchlings yet, but should any day now.

Camping with Mary and Warren

I spent the week camping in northern Wisconsin with my sister Mary and nephew Warren.  We dropped niece Nora at camp last weekend, but Warren’s camp didn’t start till Thursday, so we got a free week to hike and Geo-cache.

Zander Graduates from Kindergarten

Zander graduated kindergarten at Little Voyageurs’ Montessori School this week. Most kids leave Montessori after pre-school for public school kindergarten.  These 6 kids did an extra year at LVMS and their math and reading levels really show amazing progress.

Dickcissel

One more bird from Sunday…. the Dickcissel is a beautiful bird commonly found in fallow fields or tallgrass prairies. The breeding male is colored like a tiny meadowlark, with a black "V" on a yellow chest.

Nesting Red-eyed Vireo

Sunday, I birded with Steve Weston and folks from the Minnesota River Valley Audubon Society.  We had a great day with lots of fun birds.  One of the many highlights was a pair of Red-eyed Vireo building a nest in the Schaar's Bluff Park west of Hastings.
